The Revo-Rama tests LaMetric Time – the Wi-Fi clock and its applications (video)

Are you in a hurry? Just for you, here’s a quick overview in our Revo-Rama minute video!  ?

Family test of a connected digital display unit, LaMetric TIME which provides a whole range of services

I discovered La Metric Time a bit by accident (this is often the case) during a conversation on Twitter. I’ve never really been interested in basic digital display units that just show one thing or that lack flexibility. The LaMetric Time gives you the possibility to personalise your display with several applications. The unit uses Wi-Fi to search for information required on the internet.

Check out our test of the LaMetric TIME in this video episode of the Revo-Rama!

Our LaMetric TIME placed where we can all see it

Unboxing and installation of the LaMetric TIME connected digital clock

We were surprised by its size and thickness, we had imagined the LaMetric TIME as bigger but slimmer. The advantage is that you can place it beside your TV decoder or Blu-Ray machine, or under your TV for example where it can be seen easily.

Not many connecters, the box simply has a USB plug for charging (this is increasingly common to facilitate the internationalisation of objects), and a surprising jack outlet for headphones, or more logically for external speakers. The La Metric has built in speakers which are ok for sound notifications and the radio, but not sufficient for high quality audio streaming.

However the LaMetric has a Wi-Fi connectivity to enable you to connect for the setup phase, and to connect to your router/box to find information from the internet to be displayed.

iOS and Android applications
LaMetric TIME and LaMetric Smile

To control your LaMetric TIME you need the mobile companion app. This will enable you to add the applications you want and to set them up (for example values to display, measurement units or the link with the third party service). The main page ergonomics are a bit difficult to start with, but you soon get the hang of them.

The basic Apps are included: time, weather, calendar/schedule, number of subscribers on social networks, and the news via the RSS feed for example. We liked the IFTTT compatibility (we explained this while presenting the Philips HUE lights) which enables you to create scenarios with other compatible connected services and objects. You can also play your music and receive notifications from your Smartphone via Bluetooth (using a filter to avoid information overload).

There was another one that we really liked, the time of the next bus at our stop. Unfortunately this seems to only be possible for the RATP (Paris transport network) but not for the STIF (Ile de France transport network) (or maybe it’s insufficiently documented or illegible in GitHub – how do Apps like CityMapper work?). To be continued.

With LaMetric Smile you can personalise your Pixel Gifs, create new ones, share them with a community, send them to the LaMetric TIME or through iMessage (with a limited selection).

To sum up, we’re delighted with our purchase. It’s not easy today (except for very specific requirements) to find connected objects that are really interesting on a daily basis, once you’ve got the most obvious ones of course. LaMetric TIME has pride of place under our television and we use it a lot for telling the time, alarms/notifications, weather, or the time left in my schedule. The Pixel Gifs are a great idea to make it all the more fun. Now all we need is new Apps!
