Where the two earlier albums named a state or a set of memories, this one names gestures. Every title is a word you use in the studio when you write, record or arrange. What follows gives you the technical key to all six, and one further key. The rest I’m leaving to your ears.

[/et_pb_text][/et_pb_column][/et_pb_row][et_pb_row _builder_version=”4.27.7″ _module_preset=”default” global_colors_info=”{}” theme_builder_area=”post_content”][et_pb_column type=”4_4″ _builder_version=”4.27.7″ _module_preset=”default” global_colors_info=”{}” theme_builder_area=”post_content”][et_pb_text _builder_version=”4.27.7″ _module_preset=”default” global_colors_info=”{}” theme_builder_area=”post_content”]

Recomposed, the title that didn’t travel

The project was called Recomposed first. In French the word works on two levels at once: a piece of music you rework, and a family you put back together. In English it only carries the first. And that first meaning was already taken.

Deutsche Grammophon runs a series called Recomposed, in which artists rework a piece from the classical repertoire. Max Richter’s is the best known: his reading of Vivaldi’s Four Seasons, released in 2012, topped the classical charts in 22 countries. Putting out an ambient record under that name meant standing in the shadow of a catalogue that had turned it into a brand.

There was more to it than a clash of names. Rê>ON’s records go out worldwide, this webzine publishes in French and English, and a title has to stand up in both. A pun that only lands for half the readership quickly turns into a footnote.

So I looked for a native English word rather than a translation. Discomposed came from there. The term exists, and the dictionary gives it the sense of disturbing the order of something. For a record, that’s composition undone. The word has another, more common sense, which I’ll let you find. The EP is named after its opening track, and that track is the sound of a form coming apart.

[/et_pb_text][/et_pb_column][/et_pb_row][et_pb_row _builder_version=”4.27.7″ _module_preset=”default” global_colors_info=”{}” theme_builder_area=”post_content”][et_pb_column type=”4_4″ _builder_version=”4.27.7″ _module_preset=”default” global_colors_info=”{}” theme_builder_area=”post_content”][et_pb_text _builder_version=”4.27.7″ _module_preset=”default” global_colors_info=”{}” theme_builder_area=”post_content”]

Six words borrowed from the workshop

Every title comes from the vocabulary of written or recorded music. None of them is an image. Taken literally, they read like a glossary.

Second Movement is the second movement of a work, and it is literally track 2. Overdub is the act of recording a new part over one already laid down: you play on top of what is there. Half Step is the semitone, and I’ll come back to it. Counterpoint is the art of holding independent lines together, each following its own logic without melting into the other. Common Time is four-four, the most ordinary metre there is, the one a music program offers by default when you open an empty project.

That choice has a direct effect on listening. Ambient track titles usually set a scene: a forest, a city, a season. Not here. The title says what the music does, not what it depicts. It’s drier, and it’s deliberate: the second meaning of each word doesn’t need underlining to work. It turns up on some listen, or it doesn’t.

I mentioned this project at the end of the piece on how I catch ideas on the move with Ableton Note. Here it is with its final titles.

[/et_pb_text][/et_pb_column][/et_pb_row][et_pb_row _builder_version=”4.27.7″ _module_preset=”default” global_colors_info=”{}” theme_builder_area=”post_content”][et_pb_column type=”4_4″ _builder_version=”4.27.7″ _module_preset=”default” global_colors_info=”{}” theme_builder_area=”post_content”][et_pb_text _builder_version=”4.27.7″ _module_preset=”default” global_colors_info=”{}” theme_builder_area=”post_content”]

Half Step, the semitone and the half-step-away

One double meaning is worth spelling out, because it lights up the whole record. In music theory, a half step is the semitone, the smallest interval commonly used in Western music and one of the most dissonant when both notes sound together. Two neighbouring keys, close enough to rub against each other. A semitone asks to resolve; track 4 makes it wait.

In English, though, half and step are also family words. Half-brother, half-sister. Stepfather, stepmother, stepchildren. The entire English vocabulary of the blended family sits in those two prefixes, and Half Step puts them in one title.

This webzine started out as Papa Citoyen, a single father’s blog about technology and things worth doing with your children, long before it hosted a section on electronic music. That the music of Rê>ON ends up talking about what founded the site is no accident. The semitone gives you the key: the tightest interval there is, where two notes get in each other’s way and have to be taught to sound together. You can also hear it as a half step towards someone, the one you hesitate to take.

The other five titles work the same way. I’ll say no more.

[/et_pb_text][/et_pb_column][/et_pb_row][et_pb_row _builder_version=”4.27.7″ _module_preset=”default” global_colors_info=”{}” theme_builder_area=”post_content”][et_pb_column type=”4_4″ _builder_version=”4.27.7″ _module_preset=”default” global_colors_info=”{}” theme_builder_area=”post_content”][et_pb_text _builder_version=”4.27.7″ _module_preset=”default” global_colors_info=”{}” theme_builder_area=”post_content”]

From dissolution to common time

Played in order, the record traces a path. It opens on a form coming apart. A second movement begins. A new voice settles over a track that existed before it. You hit a semitone that refuses to resolve. Two lines coexist without merging. And everything ends on common time, the simplest metre going.

The two longest pieces frame the set: Discomposed opens on six minutes, Common Time closes on a little over six. Between them, four tighter pieces, from three and a half to five minutes.

The material is spare: slow pads, long decays, almost no percussion. It’s a record for the night, or for work that asks for concentration. That doesn’t make it music that disappears. The harmonies move slowly, but they move, and every track ends somewhere other than where it started. It rewards headphones at a moderate level, with the ends of tracks left alone: that’s often where the next one is being prepared.

Discomposed, the opener, is also the track I pitched to Spotify’s playlist editors. I picked it for how it holds up musically, not for its name. It has one other distinction, and it has to do with how the EP was made: it’s the last piece I wrote on a MIDI keyboard. The five that follow were born on a pad grid. That change of tool is the subject of a separate piece from the workshop, on what the controller changes in composing.

[/et_pb_text][/et_pb_column][/et_pb_row][et_pb_row _builder_version=”4.27.7″ _module_preset=”default” global_colors_info=”{}” theme_builder_area=”post_content”][et_pb_column type=”4_4″ _builder_version=”4.27.7″ _module_preset=”default” global_colors_info=”{}” theme_builder_area=”post_content”][et_pb_code _builder_version=”4.27.7″ _module_preset=”default” global_colors_info=”{}” theme_builder_area=”post_content”][/et_pb_code][/et_pb_column][/et_pb_row][et_pb_row _builder_version=”4.27.7″ _module_preset=”default” global_colors_info=”{}” theme_builder_area=”post_content”][et_pb_column type=”4_4″ _builder_version=”4.27.7″ _module_preset=”default” global_colors_info=”{}” theme_builder_area=”post_content”][et_pb_text _builder_version=”4.27.7″ _module_preset=”default” global_colors_info=”{}” theme_builder_area=”post_content”]

Every new Rê>ON track lands in your library the day it comes out. Follow.

[/et_pb_text][/et_pb_column][/et_pb_row][et_pb_row _builder_version=”4.27.7″ _module_preset=”default” global_colors_info=”{}” theme_builder_area=”post_content”][et_pb_column type=”4_4″ _builder_version=”4.27.7″ _module_preset=”default” global_colors_info=”{}” theme_builder_area=”post_content”][et_pb_text _builder_version=”4.27.7″ _module_preset=”default” global_colors_info=”{}” theme_builder_area=”post_content”]

A sleeve with no words on it

The two earlier albums had sleeves that showed a scene. This one breaks with that. It starts from the Rê>ON logo and its reel-shaped O, blown up until it fills the square. The circle is cut into two offset halves, orange on the left, violet on the right, crumbling into dots along the fault line. No title, no artist name: the word Discomposed said in a single gesture.

There’s a practical reason for stripping it back. On a phone, a sleeve shows up as a thumbnail a couple of centimetres wide, next to dozens of others. A simple sign reads at that size; a detailed scene turns to mush.

Continuity comes from what hasn’t moved. The logo is unchanged, and the cream, orange and violet palette is the one Léopoldine Kammerer designed for the Rê>ON identity. The version out at release is a procedural mock-up built from those elements alone. It does a sleeve’s job without pretending to be an illustration, and it will most likely be reworked the day the record gets an expanded edition.

[/et_pb_text][/et_pb_column][/et_pb_row][et_pb_row _builder_version=”4.27.7″ _module_preset=”default” global_colors_info=”{}” theme_builder_area=”post_content”][et_pb_column type=”4_4″ _builder_version=”4.27.7″ _module_preset=”default” global_colors_info=”{}” theme_builder_area=”post_content”][et_pb_text _builder_version=”4.27.7″ _module_preset=”default” global_colors_info=”{}” theme_builder_area=”post_content”]

The Discomposed EP, a format I stand behind

Six tracks and twenty-eight minutes: to the platforms, that isn’t an album. Apple Music’s style guide requires the EP label on any release of four to six songs with a total running time of thirty minutes or less. At seven tracks, or past thirty minutes, a release falls outside those boxes and shows up as an album.

I could have added a seventh piece to cross the line. I didn’t. The arc runs in six steps, from dissolution to common time; one more would have been filler, and listeners hear filler. A short format isn’t a reduced version of something else. It has its own shape, and a length you can take in one sitting.

None of which stops the record from growing later. An expanded edition could turn it into an album, with pieces that extend these. That would be a different object, with a different reason to exist.

Discomposed sits in a French scene I began mapping with ten French artists worth hearing.
